China's total water resources rank sixth in the world, but its per capita water resources are only a quarter of the world average, ranking 88th out of N countries continuously counted by the World Bank. The future situation of water scarcity in China will be very severe. However, the lack of coordinated development between industrialization and environmental pollution control is highly likely to bring about this severe situation ahead of schedule.

With the acceleration of urbanization and industrialization in China, the discharge of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater is increasing day by day. The discharge of sewage into the environment has led to the continuous deterioration of natural water quality. As of 2021, the pollution situation of water resources in China is very severe. The pollution of water resources poses a serious threat to the sustainable development of urban economy and society. China's sewage treatment capacity has grown rapidly, and as of 2023, the sewage treatment rate has reached a relatively high level. It is expected that the growth rate of the number of sewage treatment plants and daily sewage treatment capacity in the country will slow down in the future. However, compared with developed countries, China's sewage treatment rate is relatively low, heavy metal pollution in sewage is severe, and sludge disposal is very backward. There is still a significant gap in the sewage industry.
