The Vodexpo Russian Water Conference was founded in 2017. As one of the world's largest freshwater resource countries, with the continuous advancement of industrialization and urbanization, water pollution problems in Russia are becoming increasingly serious. The Russian government and enterprises are gradually increasing their attention to water treatment and environmental protection, and the demand for water treatment membrane separation technology is also increasing.

China and Russia are both BRICS countries. With the rapid growth of China's investment in countries along the "the Belt and Road", China Russia trade has been growing steadily for several consecutive years. Taking the capital Moscow as an example, the Ivanov Reservoir, which connects the Volga River and supplies drinking water to Moscow citizens, has shown an increasing trend in harmful substances in its water in recent years, especially during rainy seasons. The Water Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences analyzed that this represents a large amount of unmonitored sewage flowing from drainage ditches into rivers and reservoirs.

The research institute also stated that most of Russia's wastewater treatment plants and pipeline facilities were built during the Soviet era, and after decades of use, the aging phenomenon is very serious. Currently, 60% of wastewater treatment plants are overloaded, and 38% of wastewater treatment plants have been in operation for 25-30 years and urgently need to be rebuilt. Within a year, there is an average of one operational accident per 5 kilometers of sewer pipes.

In addition, the scale, dirt, and rust in old water pipes also deteriorate the water quality, causing secondary pollution. At present, the total length of the water supply pipeline in Russia is about 561000 kilometers, of which 66% of the water pipes are severely worn, 38.2% of the water pipes need to be replaced, and the number of water pipes that need to be replaced is increasing year by year at a rate of 1.3%.

According to data released by the Consumer Rights Protection and Public Welfare Supervision Bureau of the Russian Federation, due to the decline in water quality at water supply points and the long-term disrepair of pipeline facilities, 17% of Russia's tap water does not meet hygiene standards, and about 6% of tap water microorganisms exceed standards.

From selling products to exporting technology, Russia has become the fourth largest water treatment market

China is Russia's largest source of imports. In 2017, Russia imported $48.04 billion from China, of which the import value of mechanical and electrical products reached $25.45 billion, accounting for 32.9% of the Russian import market. Among the imported electromechanical products, the growth rate of water treatment equipment such as reverse osmosis equipment, industrial water treatment equipment, and complete sewage treatment equipment is relatively significant. In addition, household water purification products such as water softeners, water purifiers, and water purifiers produced in China also have a certain market share in Russia.

The Russian government's increasing emphasis on environmental protection has driven up demand for water treatment equipment and technology. In order to improve the aging domestic water supply system, the Russian government began implementing the "Clean Water" plan in 2010. The national finance allocates 20 billion rubles annually to replace water supply facilities. The goal is to make the tap water used by the people meet the qualified standards by 2014, and to make 85% of the people use the central water supply system by 2017. As a result, China's exports of water treatment equipment to Russia have rapidly increased at a compound annual growth rate of 8.5%.

At the end of 2013, Russia announced a support plan for the water treatment industry, encouraging the introduction of advanced foreign technologies, which allowed Chinese companies to smell new business opportunities. In 2015, Hainan Lisheng Company reached a strategic cooperation with Ecolos Group of Russia, with Lisheng providing equipment and technology to build a water purification facility worth over 100 million US dollars in Russia. This is the first time that Chinese water treatment enterprises have shifted from product exports to technology exports. Nowadays, Russia has become the fourth largest market for China's water treatment equipment exports.

Household water purification equipment is popular

The water quality of the water supply points has declined, making the tap water in Russia basically unsuitable for direct drinking. In some places, even simple boiling of water is still harmful to health. On the one hand, it is because the water quality is too hard, and on the other hand, due to inadequate treatment, certain impurities and even microbial residues exceed the standard. Due to the above reasons, the sales of household water purification equipment in Russia are relatively good, and some people even only drink bottled water.

Most Russians use a filter kettle or water purifier to filter out harmful substances to human health, such as chlorine, lime, iron, and organic impurities, before drinking tap water.

In recent years, Chinese brands such as Haier, Midea, and Gree have entered the Russian market through cooperation with local enterprises. The water purification equipment produced in China is already very close to brands such as Brita and Barrier in terms of product functionality and quality. However, the price of water filters and replacement filter elements is much cheaper, which has made it popular among many Russian people.
